Key Takeaways
Skydiving creates deep bonds because the sport requires trust, teamwork, and shared high-intensity experiences in the air. The community thrives on mentorship, welcoming newcomers and supporting their progression from first jump to experienced skydiver. Skydivers share a global culture, where licensed jumpers can travel to dropzones worldwide and instantly connect with others through the sport. Being part of the community offers powerful personal benefits, including confidence, meaningful friendships, adventure, and strong emotional support.
The skydiving community is a tight-knit, welcoming, and passionate group, often described as a family that connects, supports, and shares adventures. But how does the skydiving community, made up of so many people from different walks of life, cultivate such an unbreakable bond?
Let’s start with what percent of the population goes skydiving. Only 0.15% of the people in the United States make a tandem skydive each year – that’s about 1 in 650 people. And that number drops to 0.012% when counting people who hold skydiving licenses – that’s only 1 out of every 8,000 Americans! That means that to be a skydiver, you’re part of an extremely exclusive group of people who share a love for adventure and adrenaline. It’s impossible not to bond over something like that!
Let’s take a look at the sport of skydiving and the people in it to understand what makes the culture so special.

More Than a Sport, Skydiving Is a Shared Lifestyle
Skydiving is a sport, yes, but it goes so far beyond simple physical activity. Many skydivers will tell you that their favorite thing about skydiving isn’t the jumps, but the people. It’s the time spent planning skydives, learning from each other, antics on the ground between jumps, and bonfires when the day is done.
Skydivers travel together, sleep in tents for days at a time just to attend skydiving festivals called boogies, and have each other’s backs on the ground and in the air. There’s a mutual respect that exists between skydivers that honors the sport and the people who love it.
So, what does skydiving say about a person? While many people believe that it means they love adrenaline and taking risks, it actually shows they are collaborative, courageous, and crave deep, meaningful experiences.
Trust Built at 14,000 Feet
In many ways, sharing time in the sky with another person goes beyond fun and adventure. It’s an act of trust – proverbially putting your life in each other’s hands. Being on a jump, or even in the airplane, together is an unspoken pact that everyone has each other’s best interest at heart.
Skydivers check each other’s gear before exit, read and respond to each other’s emotions, and commit to executing the jump plan that they developed together. When you jump with another person, you’re saying, “I trust you to look out for me the way I’m looking out for you.” And skydivers take that commitment seriously.
Something special happens when you bond miles above the Earth in a high stakes environment, and that connection lasts well beyond landing.
A Culture of Mentorship & Progression
Skydiving is unique in the way that the culture initiates newcomers through immediate mentorship. Even first time tandem skydivers receive training before their jump and are connected with a highly experienced instructor. Sometimes that initial relationship can grow and strengthen for years as the first time jumper becomes an AFF student, then a certified jumper, and beyond.
Every step of the certification process is facilitated by instructors who are invested in not only teaching their students the skills needed to become a skydiver, but making sure they feel welcomed into the skydiving community.
No matter where a skydiver is in their jumping career, there is always more to learn and people to learn it from. Skydiving is a lifelong sport for many, and older generations of jumpers love imparting wisdom and encouragement onto younger jumpers.
This culture of sharing and mentorship connects skydivers of all ages, experience levels, and backgrounds in an intimate web of knowledge, care, and support.

A Global Community Without Borders
One of the best parts about having a United States Parachute Association (USPA) skydiving license is that it’s a passport to skydive anywhere in the world. Once you’re part of the community at one dropzone, you’re welcome everywhere you can find an airplane and people to jump out of it with.
Even skydivers who don’t speak the same language can communicate through the beauty of a shared jump. Each and every skydiver knows the thrill and deep meaning of jumping out of airplanes, and no matter where you go in the world, that connection is undeniable.
Benefits of Being Part of the Skydiving Community
There are many benefits that come just from jumping out of an airplane on its own, but the community offers even more opportunities to improve your life.
